New Chris Brown "I can transform ya"

Check the Rhyme Ya'll Part 3 Stack Bundles

10/21/82 to 6/11/07
This weeks Check the Rhyme is special. I want to take a second to honor Stack (Stacky)Bundles and say Happy Birthday. Dude was one of the hottest lyricist ever and was so smooth with his delivery. I remember one of the first times I spoke to him, and I was telling him that I was digging a joint he did on a mix cd. He just laughed and was like "that was a throw away I was not even trying to even go hard that night. I did not even what to do that shit!", we both laughed. SMH RIP Stack you are truly missed.

"Suppose to 36 but we only had 9, getting em for 6 letting em go for 9 (900). That's 3 dollars multiply it by 9 that 2,700 every mother fucking time. Such a hell of a grind, every nickle and dime, a nickle and dime went to helping a nigga shine, heated seats helping a nigga recline, his and hers no body sitting behind." -Salute Me

"I'm comfortable home for Far Rock to roam, from RedFern to Hammels in open toe sandals. Play the corner kitty kitty on our ring tones. Sippin Nutcrack in the middle of Kingdom, I slang zones son a rapper I'm not, put words together just so happen I'm hot." -For Certain

"I leave a white trail follow the nose, gorgeous gangsta around just follow the hoes." -Ya Dig

"Kitchen so hot you could see a mirage, and a nigga move like he envisioning bars. You don't think I'm getting kitty you should see the garage, engine in the trunk you should see the Gallard, yellow ass stones you should see the shapod, pull out the camera phone you can see a manage." -Cold Rockin it

Taking a look in the mirror (Self love and acceptance)

I went to see the Chris Rock documentary "Good Hair," about a week ago. The movie touched on a lot of different things but what really stood out in my head was the perception that we have of our selves as black women and the things that shaped who we are, like the images that are on TV and the house holds we come from. It also posed a deeper question to me. What is beauty to you, and what perception of beauty do you project in your household?

From a young kid to an adult I have had almost everything done to my hair, from a jerry curl (shut up), to a long weave, relaxer, braids, natural, you name it I may have had it. Now that I'm older I prefer and occasional weave but I need my hair relaxed at all times. I never really thought of it as not embracing who I am at all, I just feel that I like my hair a certain way and that is how I am going to wear it. But then I started to think about my daughter, she is 7 years old now and she goes to the salon every two weeks to get her hair washed and braided. I personally love her hair fresh out of braids, wavy and natural but her father is always calling her Macy Gray and laughs at her hair but I think she is getting use to that now. Sometimes she will even go out with her hair in an Afro. Even with that being said she comes from a very big family and a lot of her cousins are mixed in nationality so I wondered how that has effected her and what is her perception of beauty?

So when I picked her up from the bus stop we did are usual kisses and hugs and how was your day, but as I pulled up to the house I turned off the car and I said, "Pooh, I want to ask you something and I want you to answer this as best as you can." She gave me a look of curiosity and said, "What mommy?" Ok now I'm thinking oh no what if she says something way out of left field, that I'm not ready for, oh well here goes nothing. "So what makes a person pretty to you Pooh." "Humm?" she says as she looks puzzled. I began to reassure her that she can answer as honest as possible. So she goes on to tell me," Well first it's the hair, you can have long hair, curly hair, braids, I like it when people have braids and the back straight down, that is pretty to me. Oh yeah even some short hair cuts are nice too." So I decide to take it a step further and ask her "Well what about skin color." (I mean come on y'all you know most of us grew up thinking light and curly was the bomb and some still believe that to this day). Bracing myself I'm ready for her answer. She seemed nervous but she proceeds, "Brown skin is pretty like me, all browns are nice." I began to smile "White skin is pretty too, like my cousins Tresure and Angel but white white skin ewww I don't like white skin mommy it is not pretty at all." As we walk into the house she then says, "Oh yeah and being too skinny or too fat is not pretty, people should be skinny like me but not to fat that they can't breath." I laugh and we both leave the conversation outside of the door.

A few days later I think back to this conversation and I'm saying to myself damn I missed the big picture. I was so elated that my baby embraces who she is I forgot to teach her the bigger lesson of embracing others for who they are. I should have told her that it is great to believe you are pretty, and that she is pretty but not just for her looks. I should have told her how proud I was of her for loving herself, but that we are all pretty in some way shape or form. I should have told her that beauty is not only because you have long or short, straight or curly hair, weather you are fat or skinny but beauty comes from within. I know sometimes it sounds like a load of crap but sit back and really think about it. Sometimes you can see the prettiest girl or the fliest dude but they have the most jacked up attitude, and that can change your whole image of that person. So I guess today on our ride home we will have a talk about acceptance. Acceptance of ourselves and others around us. I'm by no means the parent of the year but I do believe if we teach our children acceptance and tolerance at an early age as well as self love the world may not be the greatest place but it surly would be a better one.

Lil Wayne Pleads guilty to gun charges.

Today rapper Dwayne Carter aka Lil Wayne has plead guilty in a New York city court for attempted criminal possession of a weapon for a gun that was found on his tour bus back in July of 07. Lil Wayne will serve one year in prison for his guilty plea. If he had went to trial he would have faced more serious gun charges and a maximum of 15 years in prison. It is just sad to see that here is another black man leaving behind his children to to serve time in jail for stupidity. SMH@ the fact that with all the money that these stars have they won't pay a body guard to legally carry a gun to protect them. What a shame. Shyne gets out Wayne goes in.

Shyne u can sleep in the spare room (cries).

Is this a preview for the regular season? Knicks -vs- Celtics

Last night the New York Knicks faced the Boston Celtics in an exhibition game. Surprisingly there were a lot of Celtics fans in The Garden last night, unless they were disgruntled Knicks fans. Many people believed that last season with the new coach Mike D'Antoni, and a new direction that the Knicks were going to make it to the playoffs. This did not come to fruition but they did end the season better then their 07-08 season. With few additions being made to the team such as new center 7ft Darko Milicic and three rookies to the team, they hope to add a presence in the center as well as some youth.
Even though last nights game was very sloppy for both teams the Knicks gave NY fans hope that with team work and hard play for 4 full quarters that they may just be in contention for the playoffs this season.
David Lee was on point with his normal double double for the game, with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Nate Robinson 21 points, Al Harrington 20 points, and Danilo Gallinari finally showed all the doubters out there that he may just be what the Knicks need, scoring 18 points.
Now this game by no means can tell what to expect for the regular season, but it does show the Knicks that they can play well against and beat a team that is suppose to superior. I know only time will tell what the regular season holds for the Knicks, but I'm just hoping that time gives the Knicks at least 8th place in the Eastern conference for the playoffs.

Check the Rhyme Ya'll Part 2 KRS ONE

Many rappers have metaphors or funny lines that stick with you, or that you don't understand until years later. So with Check the rhyme each week will feature an artist and some of their lines that may have stood out in some way, weather thought provoking or just plain funny enjoy and feel free to comment or add your favorite lines.

"Too Many MC's take that word 'emcee' lightly, they can't even move a crowd not even slightly." MC's act like they don't know

"Some of us guess while others of us are blessed take hed to the words that I manifest. I manifest the future, the present followed by the past, everything in nature rules by kicking ass. What you tellin me, but yo you a friend to me, so I'ma tell you the secrects of MC longevity." -Health Wealth Self

"Like John Lennon, yes I'm I-C-M'n. I start grinnin, and syllables start bendin
My style is untangible, like a wild animal.Check the label as it goes round it's on Capitol. That's what I'm smackin you with cause it's easy. Like Lionel Richie, your whole style is bitchy, switch me, mix me, somebody get me. Don't let me rip out my clothes like Bill Bixby rippin the microphone 'til I'm motherfuckin sixty. Smokin the indo, by the window, it's sticky." -Mad Izm

"Here's what the West and the East have in common. Both have black cops in cars profilin. Hardcore kids in the West got stress. In the East we are chased by the same black beast. The black cop is the only real obstacle. Black slave turned black cop is not logical, but very psychological, haven't you heard? It's the BLACK COP killin black kids in Johannesburg!" -Black Cop

The voice the Muse gave.

She has consumed my thoughts and my world
since I let her walk back into my life.

Waking me up in my sleep,
restless now.
Consumed by this love,
endless nights.

I'm embracing this grind.
I'm loving this feeling.

Loving the consumption
over my mind, body and soul.
Loving the healing.

Who would have thought,
a love lost rekindled into
a burning flame.

The love's loving embrace
we shall both share the blame.

I'm giving her my all, my love,
my time, my soul, and
my dedication.

For she has given me freedom,
a voice, something to love, and
life preparations.

Preparation for this cruel world.
So now I will shout out with this voice
that yells in ink.

Using my voice as I know I should,
because it is a gift from the most high
which can be taken in a blink.

Drake Claims He's Not Dissing Tupac on 'Fear' - The Boombox

(click link for full story)
A lot of these artists need to understand that being a rapper is not just about spitting hot lines or knowing about what is current. They need to do their history and pay homage to those who came before them. Being a master of a craft comes from research and knowing who paved the way for you to be where you are. Even though Drake states he was too young to be affected by the death of 2Pac many will take his words as disrespect to one of the legends of the game. All I can say is Drake is that your hot now but how long will that fire burn. Respect those who made this thing possible for you, because I'm pretty sure that Pac's fan base dead is way bigger than yours alive so don't burn your bridges homie.

The Hip-Hop Dishonors

When I heard that this years VH1 Hip Hop honorees were the founders of Def Jam, Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin I was more than excited, I could not wait until the show aired. All I could do was sit and think about the things that Def Jam as a company has stood for and the many acts that it has produced. No doubt this is going to be one of the hottest shows ever right? Being that Def Jam has been the foundation for so many hip hop artists and business ventures, from LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and Foxy Brown just to name a few, and the fact that it has allowed an array of artist to share their vision through music, I just knew this was going to be a hot show. As a label Def Jam has also allowed a lot of young minorities to become entrepreneurs and have their own branch off labels such as Roc A Fella Records and Murder Inc. So to me Def Jam is hip hop or at least the home of two founding fathers of hip-hop and hip-hop culture but also self expression through the hip-hop as a culture. With my mind running wild with all the possibilities of what was going to make this a great show I could not wait.
I was seated front and center of my television because the moment had finally arrived.
I'm waiting for that first MC to take the stage and rock the mic, but it was Tracy Morgan doing some sort or parody, I'm not really sure if people think he is funny or not but I was simply bored with his antics and quiet frankly he took away that grand entrance I had been anticipating. Upset at the fact that the climatic moment I had been waiting for was ruined I had secretly wished that the show was a DVR recording so I could fast forward his part. Throughout the show there were many more of these moments where I just wanted to fast forward some performers.

As I look back I'm not really sure what I expected. A lot of the performers had not rocked a mic in a long time but I guess I was searching for that place that music had taken me when I was a little younger. Don't get me wrong the whole show was not a waste, there were some strong acts that really did come out and repped for Def Jam. Public Enemy came out hard and had lots of energy. Method Man and Redman always do their thing and kept the crowd rocking and there is never a dull moment when those two are performing, even if you don't know the words to the song their energy in itself gets your attention and I can't forget Ludacris he is always a show man and blows the roof off. But it seemed just as you got lifted up you were let down again the
grand finale was not all it was hyped up to be, many artist came out from EMPD to Fabolous and Foxy Brown but they were only on the stage for a meir second or two which felt like you were being robbed as a fan. I guess the two greatest disappointments of the night though were DMX and the missing LL Cool J. While it was good seeing Earl on the stage it was just not the DMX of old and the whole time I could not help but to think where are Ruff Ryders? That would have been so dope. And I would love to know why LL didn't preform? He is practically the face of Def Jam, he really should have shut down the show like the true G.O.A.T. is suppose to.

Maybe I just expect too much. Maybe the visualization of Hip-Hop that I love, the company that has brought so many artist into the game that I grew up listening to was just not worth an extra hour or so to allow each artist to preform properly. It must be the puppet master at the top pulling the strings that does not understand that hip-hop is not only music, it's a life style, a culture and a movement. Def Jam is hip-hop, it has given light to what is now called the hip- hop culture. I really do believe that VH1 could have came a little better with the production for two man that have done so much for music, people and even for VH1's pockets and rating. Oh and a side bar to VH1 please no more Kid Rock and Tracy Morgan they are so not hip-hop. Peace.

To my Muse

It has been awhile. I had thought that I had lost that feeling, that urge to write, but all along it has been there. I was told when I was 18 that I found my Muse. Cocky and arrogant I never even loved her, over the years I have taken her for granted. I did not take as much time as I should have to nurture her. I felt that she had left me or forsaken me but it was the opposite, I had turned my back on her. All the while she stood by my side wanting and needing my guidance. So now I want to take my time and groom her, listen to her, and to give her that attention that she has always craved.

Somewhere along the way I began to believe in writers block, and the dreaded mental freeze, but a great writer once said that there is no such thing, "for there is only writing, no matter what you write just let it flow and your words will form their own meaning." So I'm going to let my words be my guide.

I have been side tracked by self doubt, and the doubt of others. But my Muse spoke to me the other day and told me that today is day 1 of the rest of my life. I shall never again take for granted this gift that was giving to me. For my Muse has been my love from a young age and she has always listened when no one else would. She has held me though my lonely nights, and rejoiced in my triumphs. She has been my tears when I could no longer cry, my laughter when nothing was funny, my light in the dark, and my salvation when I needed saving.

Thank you for never doubting me and always being there even when I thought you had left me, you always let it be known that you were here to stay and now I shall return the favor. Thank you for being my voice.

Forever indebted,
lakiamaria

A boxer's Ambition

It was over 16years ago when Bernard Hopkins faced Roy Jones Jr. for the vacant IBF Middleweight title, in which Hopkins lost a unanimous decision. At the time of that fight Hopkins was 28years of age and Jones 24. Now Hopkins 44 and Jones 40 I ask what is the point of this fight? Jones is now a shell of the fighter that he once was losing 4 of his last 9 bouts and Hopkins record does not look that much better losing 3 of his last 9. Many will dispute the two loses to Jermain Taylor and will point out his destruction of De La Hoya and most recently Kelly Pavlik, but the fact still remains, when is it time to hang up the boxing gloves and what is there to gain from this match that should have taken place over a decade ago.

But with the boxing world in such a big slump, many fighters are well over their prime and still chasing a dream, while others are becoming champions in a sport that does not believe in an undisputed champion nor unifying titles. At this point it seems that anyone can fight and stand a chance of being a champion of some sort.

The boxing fans have been being slighted for so long, and now this is just another pay per view event that will run a fan $49.99, when everyone knows that this should be broadcast on ESPN. But because most boxing fans are looking for that one big fix, that fight of the year, that one big Tyson moment or are on a quest to see the next Sugar Ray Leonard we will continue to support these Pay per view events only to be let down .

Only time will tell when that next big match will be and as fans we will keep watching and waiting for this moment. But I say to you boxers who continue to fight and tarnish your legacy, when is it time to stop chasing a dream? And what happens if that dream does not materialize? As fans we dream too but as a legend in the game don't let that dream become a nightmare.
